Although considered to be Government breeding because he was bred by the US Gov't Farm, Sonfield was actually mostly of the Old Vermont lines with a lines to Daniel Lambert also. His sire, Mansfield, was out of Artemisia, bred by A. Fullerton Phillips who bred many Lippitt Foundation Morgans. Mansfield's sire, Bennifield, was by General Gates who was of a good Daniel Lambert line. However, Bennifield was out of Mrs. Culvers who was a Saddlebred, and not a very good one at that. Sonfield's dam, Quietude, was out of a mare of the same old Vermont lines as Artemisia. Quietude's sire, Troubadour of Willowmoor, was an excellent Morgan himself and had a royal pedigree with a sire heavy in Black Hawk lines and a dam from the same Old Vermont lines as most of the rest of Sonfield's pedigree.
We own a great grand-daughter of Sonfield (Trindex SonRise) and great, great grandson of Sonfield (The Star of Sonfield). My sister & I owned Beckridge Trindex who was a grandson to Sonfield. Best horse in the world for two young teens to raise & train.
ReplyDeleteAnother one in Feronia's pedigree, on her dam's side as sire of Blossom F
